So many of my friends are complaining about bad backs, stiff necks, and achy arms. They are running to chiropractors, getting massages, doing yoga, and taking hot showers. It turns out that their office chairs may be ruining their lives.
Steelcase, a global leader in office furniture, recently admitted that very few people actually sit in an office chair the way it was designed for them. There is a whole new set of requirements. Office workers are using smartphones, tablets, iPhones, and ebooks while they are sitting in the same chair that they used for a desktop computer.
After studying 2000 office workers using mobile devices in their office chairs, Steelcase identified nine new postures that need to be taken into consideration. A whole new set of ergonomics had to be developed to accommodate our whole new cocooning and strunching postures at our desks. It’s “the new science of sitting.”
Steelcase feels it has mastered the new demands with the Gesture. The chair will not be ready for months, and the price has not been set. But it may just pay for itself in what you save on chiropractic visits.
Watch the video below to see all the considerations that went into getting this right.
The Gesture chair will be available in the fall. I am curious to try one too…the research is fascinating.
