Three times this week, newly retired friends have talked to me about empty days. They all had had demanding jobs. No matter how much they now travel, babysit for grandchildren, exercise, or play cards, tennis, and golf, they say something is missing.
My guess is that nothing is missing other than the demands of a job. In my experience, every time I finished a big project I got that empty feeling until the next big assignment came along. Everyone has to ease into a new situation.
The one desire some of my friends mentioned is to work for a non-profit or volunteer their time. They want to give back. I recently came across a piece in Huffington Post that talked about seven new websites to help folks find a non-profit job.
I am not going to call these pals with this information because I don’t know if they were seriously considering it. However, I will post it here. Click away. Also check out Next Avenue. It’s a great resource for senior news.
