If you work in the Flatiron district of Manhattan, you’ve probably seen Anthony Weiner (the former New York congressman who disgraced himself in a Twitter scandal a few years ago) having lunch on the terrace of the popular hot spot Almond Restaurant on East 22nd Street between Broadway and Park Avenue South.
I have been wondering since the beginning of last summer why he hangs out there so much since there are a hundred or so restaurants in the area. An article in the New York Times finally spelled it out. His brother Jason owns the restaurant.
I find it interesting that Weiner and his wife Huma Abedin, a Hillary Clinton senior advisor, decided to move into the area approximately two years ago, just after he sent an inappropriate picture of himself to some strange gal on Twitter. That tweet and a few others cost Weiner his political position. You can read all about it here.
Shortly after all hell broke loose, Weiner and Abedin, then pregnant, left their co-op in Queens, New York and moved into Manhattan. I am not sure if they rent or own, but they live on 20th and Park, smack in the middle of the city’s digital world. Tumblr, Business Insider, Mashable, General Assembly, Digitas, and dozens of tech journalists for Google, Yahoo, Tech Crunch, and CNET live in the area. If you want to stay off the social media and tech radar screen, this is not the place to live.
It is obvious by the New York Times Magazine coverage that Weiner wants to be in the limelight. There is a heavy concentration of Twitter fans in the area that can track his every move. The other day Eliot and I were driving down 21st Street on our way home from work when we saw someone whiz by our car with a trail of paparazzi behind him. There goes Weiner.
I suggest you read the New York Times piece on Weiner. The writer did a great job talking about his social media downfall, his relationship with his wife, what Hillary and his family had to say, his political ambitions, and why he feels he should be the next Mayor of New York.
His journey is a great case study about how social media can make or break you. I am interested in your opinion about Weiner’s run. Let’s hear from you.
