Monthly Movie Pass for a Dollar a Day

Most of the time, Eliot and I are the oldest ones in the movie theater. I think as we get older our friends are less likely to shell out for a trip to the movies. The candy is more than the admission. Don’t call the cops, but we figured out a way to see multiple movies per afternoon for one price.

We call it movie surfing. We feel like teenagers sneaking into one screening room after another. I am always afraid that someone is watching us from a video camera. Just what I need — getting busted watching Argo.

Now in its third iteration, there is an app called MoviePass that allows you to go to the movies every day of the week for $30 a month. It was first available on Android, later on iPhone.

When you sign up you get a Discover Card with the MoviePass logo on it. After you activate the app at the ticket booth, you only have 30 minutes to use your card to make a purchase before it’s deactivated again.

Let me know if you buy MoviePass. I am eager to know if this is an advantage.

  1. I’d definitely get this and activate it during the summer and in December, when there are crushes of good movies. Aside from those two times, it’s often hard for me to find a single movie I want to see. The 30-day window per activation accommodates that schedule beautifully. Think about it: if you go to three movies a month, it begins to save you money, depending on how much your theaters charge. Thanks for the Hot Tip, as usual, Lois!
