You Caught Me, I Am Binge TV Watching

Lena Dunham
I went to work on two hours sleep today. I did okay until around 2-ish when my eyes started to close. I don’t know if it was exhaustion or the big lunch I ate, but I was ready to pass out. I made it through three successful telephone conference calls with clients and a staff meeting, but by the time business associate Susan Babcock came to visit me this afternoon, I was ready for bed.

The minute she left, I went straight home, slept for an hour, and then started binge watching again. I am determined to get through all of the episodes of Girls, the TV series that premiered on HBO last year. Created by and starring Lena Dunham, Girls is a comedy-drama that reminds one of Sex in the City, with an updated twist. The show is about four twenty-something girls living in Brooklyn.

The most fascinating part for me is how Lena Dunham, starting at the age of 26, not only created and stars as Hannah in this much-heralded TV series, but she writes and directs most episodes. Garnering much jealousy in the industry, she has already taken home a Golden Globe. Where do these kids come from? How do they make it happen?

The other shocker is that the role of Marnie, Hannah’s best friend, is played by Allison Williams, daughter of the well-respected and highly-regarded TV newscaster Brian Williams. He has said he is very proud of Allison, and that they watch the show together as a family.

Nudity and sex romps comprise a major part of Season One. You often see the major characters unclothed. The entire premise is supposedly based on the way twenty-somethings live their lives today. I don’t understand how they are not all bow-legged.

I am binge viewing the show now, rather than having watched it when it debuted, because I had no patience for it at first. Then I happened to see an episode that reminded me so much of a few conversations I had had with my own daughter about child/parent relationships that I just had to take a closer look.

So what have I learned? I don’t know how I would have survived being a young woman today.
