We Are Family

Sydney and Celeste Corcoran

Normally, I would be thrilled to announce that a crowdfunding campaign on Facebook raised $200,000 for a good cause in one day. While the amount is staggering, the reason for the cause never should have happened. Celeste Corcoran and her daughter Sydney had shrapnel rip through their legs when the bomb went off at the Boston Marathon. They were standing at the finish line at the four-hour mark.

Our friends at Mashable, a tech site, reported that both of Celeste’s legs were amputated below the knee and Sydney had massive blood loss. Their fate for further operations are unknown as they remain in Boston Medical Center. Celeste, a hair dresser, and Sydney, a high school senior, now face a life of physical and mental uncertainty not to mention the inability to pay the medical bills quickly mounting up.

As I write this, I freak at the possibility that this can happen to any one of us. One minute we are living life to the fullest, next we are fighting for our lives.

The Corcoran’s are getting tremendous support from Alyssa Carter, a cousin who started the GoFundMe campaign about 24 hours after the attack. Forty first cousins helped spread the word about the Facebook page.

The campaign has generated 15,000 Facebook likes and tweeted more than 600 times. TV host Chelsea Handler made a $25,000 donation.

There is nothing like family and friends to come to the rescue in time of need.
