I have been writing this blog for almost a year. There have been some marvelous technology revelations during that time. I think the one I am about to describe is really a mindblower.
Now, for the first time ever, there is an app, for both Android and iOS, that lets you visualize how furniture or art work that you might want to buy from an ecommerce site will look in your home. Aptly called Augment, the “try it on” button on Augment-connected ecommerce sites will overlay the item anywhere you point your smartphone or tablet camera in your home.
This is a huge bonus for any online site that sells big ticket items. Unlike clothing, gadgets, shoes, and books, larger items are more difficult to purchase online because consumers can’t try them on and then easily return them if they don’t fit.
All that is yesterday’s news if the online site offers the ability to virtually “try it on.” Augment allows you to see the item you may want to buy, close up, further away, against a wall, or even in the middle of the room. All you have to do is keep rotating it.
The app was debuted this week at SXSW, one of the biggest digital conferences in the world.
Mashable, a popular tech site, interviewed the French founder of Augment. Click on the video below to see how Augment works.
If this demo doesn’t amaze you, nothing will.

This would also be a fantastic tool for interior designers and art buyers. Very cool!
