One of my faithful DigiDame readers, who is an investor in the high tech business, says that Yahoo never had any intention of keeping Summly alive.
“They basically paid the wunderkind, Nick D’Aloisio, $30 million to get him and his small engineering team. Yahoo plans on using Summly’s algorithmic summarization technology in other Yahoo products. The possible copyright suit is a moot point since Yahoo is shutting down the Summly app as it existed. D’Aloisio reportedly did not get the necessary approvals/permission to republish other original content publishers’ stories. Yahoo clearly understood this issue. So they simply shut down Summly’s mobile app and will now apply its summarization algorithm that automatically shortens stories to its Yahoo News, Yahoo Finance, Yahoo Sports, and other content offerings to make them suitable for mobile device consumption.”
