Signs of Life

I saw my future today. The younger generation is being warned that I may be taking a stroll on the same sidewalk where they walk and talk mindlessly on cell phones.

“Watch out for Lois! She is walking in your vicinity. Make sure you don’t knock her over.”

I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry when I saw this sign on the boardwalk next to the boating docks behind my Miami condo.

There is an apartment building a few doors down that is dedicated to senior living. Seriously, this sign is a courtesy for them, but in a blink of an eye it will be for me.

Nick Negroponte, founder and Chairman Emeritus of Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Media Lab, has been predicting for decades that our fingers will one day have tiny digital devices imbedded in them so we can point toward a door and it will open.

A Photographic Memory May Be in Your Future

memoryI can remember so many times when I was jealous of people who had a photographic memory. They would look at something once and remember it forever. Today, I just pray that I keep my wits about me for as long as I am alive. So many of my friends are so worried that they are going to get some form of dementia. It freaks them out to the point that sometimes it is the main topic of our discussions.

Marijuana Key Social Factor with Older Americans

20130322-184319.jpg

This is a post about getting high, but not high tech as I usually pound away about. There was a tweet that I caught earlier that pointed to a New York Times story that said yes, indeed, more older Americans are using marijuana in social situations.

Rock Around the LEGO

The reason I am constantly showing you creative LEGO displays is because they have come a long way since our children played with them. Thanks to technology, Giuseppe Acito, an Italian music producer, was able to put together the “Toa Mata Band,” a quartet that includes several small robotic LEGO figures programmed to play various electronic instruments.

YouTube Hits 1 Billion Monthly Visitors

20130321-195007.jpg

It’s difficult to believe that YouTube is just eight years old and is now one of the major communications vehicles in the world. Congratulations, YouTube! You have certainly changed our lives.

As a senior American, I can honestly say that the last few years of my life have been extremely fascinating because of all of the advances in technology. I love when I hear other seniors remark that they are thrilled to be witnessing all of the innovation as well. I wonder why other contemporaries don’t feel as fortunate.

YouTube alone is a wonderment. I use YouTube for everything, from creating my own channel (lwhitman) to researching every imaginable topic. I don’t know why, but I am always amazed that when I type in a topic in the search box, the greatest reference videos appear. I couldn’t ask for better explanations.

But it just may be the instrument I personally need to set me straight. “Lois, you need to lose 30 pounds. Your body fat is out of control.” Continue reading
