Vango Vs.Van Gogh

I love art. I usually buy pieces that have a lot of reds and blues in them because they provoke positive energy, at least to me. It was rather odd when I recently bought a self-portrait of a young artist that featured purples and yellows. I just felt it was very exciting. Eliot and I agree on our selections. Thank goodness for that, otherwise our walls would be bare.

I was rather tickled when I heard about the Vango app, a one-stop online shop for amateur artists to showcase their work. I think it’s wonderful because it’s always fun to buy emerging artist’s work. You never know when you are going to hit it big time.

Vango has lots of opportunities for art collectors. You can choose trending, local, or recently posted art. You can zoom in and/or use the  “Preview on Wall” which lets you see the art work on your wall at home. This Vango feature is super fun.

The photos bellow tell the whole story of the app. Start exploring.

We Are Family

They say that people who live in Manhattan are not friendly, don’t know their neighbors, and are very transient. Not in my building.

Many neighbors have been living at 301 East 62nd St.for decades. Many of us have grown older together. We gathered tonight to celebrate the retirement of Esau Mohammad. Our beloved porter has been with us 32 years. We are going to miss him like no other. He was simply the best.

My most vivid memory of Esau was when the Twin Towers came down. I remember him standing at the front door in the lobby waiting for each of us to return home. He had tears in his eyes as he hugged everyone. What a special moment. I will remember that forever no matter where I am living.

Tonight was one of many lobby parties. We had such a good time. Not a dry eye in the house. Why can’t the world just get along?

After 40 Years

We listed our NYC co-op. This is going to be a very emotional journey. There is no explanation as to why now, other than we feel it’s time. We are very fortunate to have The (Howard) Margolis Team of Douglas Elliman representing us.

Howard and I met online a few years ago, when I was searching around for an elaborate apartment to use for a press party. We did the event together in a whopper of a penthouse in Tudor City. We’ve been friendly ever since.

I never thought we would be working together on this project so soon. Eliot and I made the decision a few months ago and now one of the most famous real estate agents in the country is selling the place that has served us so well for decades. Howard was on Million Dollar Listing, NY, last week.

This is not the end for us in NYC. Eliot and I just want a different view.

A Visit From Maurice deHond

I have written about Maurice deHond before. He is now the Founder of The Steve Jobs School which is becoming the most desired education program for elementary students all over the world. We met 30 plus years ago, when he was one of the first businessmen to market personal computers in the United States. He was born and raised in Amsterdam and still lives there now.

Seth Meyers spent time in Amsterdam at a club called Boom Chicago where he perfected his comedic talents. Maurice frequented the club and performed there too. They stayed in touch and that resulted in Maurice taking us to Seth’s show.

Great meeting Seth Meyers

Start Your Own Magazine

It wasn’t that long ago that we all had printed pictures that we placed in photo albums. I used to spend hours each week looking at my photos.  I had a difficult time keeping the photos intact on the page as well as preventing them from fading, I was thrilled when everything went digital.

No more printed photos. I now keep all of my photos in my camera roll. The trouble is that I am now storing a few thousand photos and never scroll back to look at any of them.

That’s why I became intrigued with a new app called  Recently. It’s like going back to the future. Recently issues a monthly magazine featuring 100 of my best recent photos. Of course, I have to give Recently permission to review my camera roll.

Recently charges $9 a month.  If I want, I can manually select and  remove pictures before they get published. The paper magazine will be sent to me every month.

Say cheese!

Lightning In Your Living Room

Some folks really love thunder and lightning outside their window. They appreciate the booming sounds while reading a good book or watching TV. Stormy weather just makes you so grateful you are inside cozy and dry. It’s creates the most perfect atmosphere for loving your home more than ever.

That’s why designer Richard Clarkson invented an interactive light and speaker that makes you feel like you have a mini thunderstorm in your living room.

Watch the video to see just how real the storm cloud light makes you feel.

The lamp plays sounds and flashes a Philips LED light to simulate a real thunderstorm. The unit features  a Bluetooth speaker so you can sync the thunder flashes to the beat of the music. Scary but fun.

Get ready to part with some bucks if you are interested in buying the lamp. Retails at $3,360.

Smart Pillows

Smart this, smart that.

Everything we use today has to be “smart.” Now the smart technology has reached the pillow. I recently saw a demonstration of a smart pillow at eMerge, the Miami tech show.

The Chrona sleep system turns any pillow into a smart pillow. The Chrona technology is placed in a pillowcase so it can measure the movements of your head and torso. The companion app measures how well you slept and can also gently wake you up.

The company’s website explains the process.

“Chrona uses an accelerometer to measure your movements while you sleep. Its Bluetooth Low Energy module safely transmits data between your Smartpillow and smartphone. Chrona is energy-efficient, so you’ll be able to power Chrona for over a week with a single charge.”

Watch the video for a precise explanation.

Co-Founders Zimin Hang and Ben Bronsther teamed up with engineering students from Washington University in St. Louis to develop Chrona. Their company name is  Ultradia.
Expect to see more and more companies in this field. Many Americans are obsessed with how and when they sleep. They will do anything for a good night’s sleep. That sounds like big business to me.
