Passing On News Without Reading

I was not that surprised this morning when the Today Show announced a big misconception.  A new study finds that nearly 60 percent of the links people share on emails and social media have never been read by the sender.

If you click here, you can watch the Today Show announcements.

That explains the ridiculous and insane political emails I receive from people who I thought were my friends. The study suggests they read the headlines of a story and have no patience to read the rest.

Researchers say “this suggests that people tend to form an opinion, without bothering to get the full story.”
That’s a scary thought.

The Best Of Steve Greenberg

In case you are wondering what to get your favorite “mom” for Mother’s Day, our favorite “Innovation Insider,” Steve Greenberg, appeared on The Today Show yesterday with the latest gadget tips.  I pitched a product to him a few weeks ago to bring on the show, but it was rejected. This is payback time.

This is Steve’s new sports coat. He bought it at Robert Hall.

Steve told everyone he just came back from a vacation in Turkey. Judging from this photo, it looks like he spent time in Italy.

Did you know Steve was a seamstress?

Steve pretending that the toilet paper that was still hanging from him was part of the presentation.

Kathie Lee caught Steve in a thong.

Steve bends down to show off new ear plugs.

All kidding aside, click here to see some of the greatest gadget ideas for Mom. Thanks Steve.

Remotely Control Electricity In Your Home

I have always been a little jealous of my friends (yes, you Howard) who can turn light, appliances, air conditioning, and heat on/off remotely through their smartphones. They have sophisticated and smart setups. I kept telling myself I was going to learn how to do that one day until I saw the Innovation Insider (Steve Greenberg) on the Today Show this morning demonstrating the Modlet.

I said “I can do that,” and quickly looked up the Modlet on Google. I loved what I found so I decided to share it with you. The ThinkEco Modlet, $50 on Amazon, fits into your standard outlet at home and offers two sockets, each with remote control power measurements. The ThinkEco smartphone app will now allow you to control your devices and keep track of your energy savings from anywhere.

How cool is that?

You can choose one of the pre-configured schedules or create your own. Select when you want your devices to be on and off each day. Then you can have one schedule for all your devices or a custom schedule for each device. As Amazon says, “Set it and forget it.”

I Have to Defend the Mighty Mug

The Mighty Mug comes in a variety of colors

Kathie Lee Gifford of the Today Show was just goofing with Steve Greenberg, the Innovation Insider, when he recently presented the Mighty Mug to Kathy and Hoda on air. Kathie decided she wanted to have some fun and started to challenge the Mighty Mug with some heavy left hooks. At $14.99, the Mighty Mug is being billed as the mug you can depend on. “Knock it and it won’t move.” It takes a small amount of air at its base to seal it. The Mighty Mug works on non-pourous surfaces.

The Today Show Despondent Over GMA Twitter Score

20130418-212648.jpg

The Today Show has had some major blows lately because of its huge drop in viewership, but nothing could have prepared them for the hit they took this morning. Just hours ago, Twitter, with its over 250 million active users, decided to announce its entry into the music business on ABC’s Good Morning America rather than the former morning news kingpin. My sources told me that you could hear a pin drop on the set of the Today Show as rival GMA got all cozy with one of the most sensational social media platforms.

The Next Frontier for the Tech Industry: The Brain and the Ocean

For the last few days I was beginning to believe that the tech industry was getting a little boring. I was on gadget overload. As I combed through the tech sites and blogs for new innovative products and services, I was beginning to believe I had seen it all. There was no more “wow factor,” at least for me. After 47 years of being in the business, I just couldn’t be impressed.

Not so fast. I was just tipped off that I will be able to get my jollies by working for clients who are involved in brain and ocean technologies. Apparently, these are the areas the tech industry feels it must explore. I must say, I am thrilled.

President Barack Obama announced a $100 million initiative for a more advanced understanding of the mind. We all learned in grade school that the brain is the most complex structure in the universe.

Watch the video below. Ann Curry of the Today Show did an interview with a nine-year-old girl who had half her brain removed at the tender age of three. See how she is doing today. Remarkable is an understatement.

I want to get involved in tech companies who want to help expand, cure, and alter brain activities. I feel the same way about the ocean. This may be a great opportunity to feel renewed again.

Today Show Anchors Admit Internet Ignorance

Andrea Smith, a writer for the very popular tech blog, Mashable recently did an Op Ed piece on three Today Show personalities who make millions of dollars every year, who admitted on air nationwide they know little about social media. Smith was upset by this caviler attitude because when she worked for ABC as a news writer and producer for 20 years, she was expected to be knowledgable about current news and pop culture.

I met Andrea Smith a number of times at industry events and I can honestly say she doesn’t easily rag on people. That’s why her piece in Mashable caught my eye. Smith was offended that “Today’s Willie Geist, Savannah Guthrie and Natalie Morales — three TV journalists at the top of their profession — laughed on network TV about their lack of knowledge about Facebook, Twitter and privacy on social media.”

The admission took place after a segment about Randi Zuckerberg’s private family photos being shared publicly. This was a story publicized everywhere because of the privacy issue. The sister of the founder of Facebook got caught in the same privacy issue concerning the majority of Facebook users. Why is Facebook taking certain liberties with personal content belonging to its members?

Smith sent a warning to the Today Show.

“Here’s a wake-up call, morning crew; your audience is not that dumb. They watch TV news to keep up with what’s happening in the world. It is your job to inform them. Reading the news and then proclaiming you don’t understand any part of it is the epitome of failure.”

Invention Hunters on the Food Network Starts Tonight

Steve’s biggest fan club.

The staff at my New York coop is so excited today.  The guy who often stays at our apartment, the guy who often has packages arriving for him in our name, the guy who calls all of the doormen by their first name, the guy who frequently appears on Dr. Oz and The Today Show as the “Innovation Insider,” is going to be one of the most talked about people in the world of innovation today and maybe for a long, long time.  Starting tonight and for the next six Monday evenings, Steve Greenberg will be hosting a new TV Show on the Food Network along with Patrick Raymond called “Invention Hunters.”

Steve and Patrick

Produced by Lucky Dog Films, “Invention Hunters”  is exactly what I talk about in my blog posts every day.  The series is all about innovation, entrepreneurship, ambition, determination, start ups, desire, marketing, guts, and even reinventing yourself by taking risks.  The Internet plays a big part of this TV series because a lot of what is being done is made quicker, faster and better by knowing how to use it. Steve and Patrick travel across country searching for the next great food gadgets.  In many ways, “Invention Hunters” is no different than a lot of the successful reality series like “American Idol,”  “The X Factor,”  “Shark Tank,”  “House Hunters” or even “House Hunters International.”  Steve and Raymond scout for the most promising kitchen inventions, they pick three for every show, they eliminate two, and then they bring their selection to  Swerve Inc., for assistance in presentation and packaging and then finally to Lifetime Brands, a sales and distribution company for the final analysis.

At the Lifetime Brands, the chosen inventors make the pitch themselves as to why their food gadget should be on retail shelves across America.  Steve and Patrick along with the inventors wait in the lobby while the executives of Lifetime Brands decide if they will agree to distribute the product.  The anticipation is nerve racking.  Even the audience at home watching get emotionally involved because if the product gets accepted it will change the lives of these inventors forever.  There is a little bit of all of us in these segments. That is why this series is probably going to get picked up after the first six episodes.

The storyline of “Invention Hunters” is actually what the American public wants today—a way to reinvent themselves. The show gives hope that there is always a new chapter of our lives waiting to be explored. What I loved most about the preview that aired last night was what one of the inventors said when he didn’t get picked. “I will see my invention through till the end. I will make it happen. This is my passion. I can’t wait to get up in the morning to do one more thing that will make my gadget a success.”   How many of us feel exactly the same way. My guess is very few.

To catch the fever, be sure to tune into “Invention Hunters” tonight at 9pm on the Food Network.  By the way, Steve Greenberg had no idea that I was going to write about him today.  I didn’t know it myself until I sat down to write today’s post for DigiDame.  Then I remembered the inspiration I felt from each of those inventors that Steve and Patrick met.  I also thought about the people who appear on “Shark Tank.”  You may think reality shows are fake but one thing is for sure, the inventors are real.  They are so real that they motivated me one more time to try something new.
