What Happens to our Facebook Page when We Die?

20130213-225413.jpg

Facebook has had to face the death question 30 million times since its inception. Yes, 30 million users have died worldwide. Closer to home, 580,000 users died last year in the United States as compared to three million worldwide. Those statistics are being given out by sources close to Facebook.

Unbeknownst to many of us, Facebook actually has guidelines for pages belonging to the deceased. There is a whole story about it that you will find fascinating if you just press here. The reason why this topic is so interesting is because a social media platform like Facebook has its own postmortem rituals much like real life. Wait a minute, did I say that? Facebook to many people is real life or to many better than the life they have to face every day when they are offline.

A Dig at Samsung

From Jay Leno’s monologue on The Tonight Show last night: “Samsung is introducing a new smart wristwatch but not copying Apple. It’s designed to wear on your other hand.”

Make Your Texts Disappear

20130212-234147.jpg

There are times that I want to send a personal text to a friend but I don’t want others to see it. The subject can be about a job opportunity, a special gift for a love one, or just some trashy gossip. Just recently, I thought how nice it would be if I could send a text and then remove it after “the receiver” reads it.

A few days later I learned about “Silent Text.” The new technology was developed by former Navy Seals and is being introduced in an app for all platforms in the next few weeks. You are reading about this first in DigiDame.

Twitter Partners with American Express

20130212-205615.jpg

It’s hard not to be talking about Twitter all the time — it’s where most of the action has been lately. Today the social media platform announced that it was entering the eCommerce arena for the first time, in partnership with American Express. I never imagined this would happen, and I couldn’t even picture how it would work. So I checked into it. Continue reading

Underground Hysteria

My girlfriend Ruth sent this video to me this morning because I told her why I hate taking the subway. You get to a certain age and you say “Enough.”

At 65, I am still working. I want to work forever but I don’t want to put myself in harm’s way, twice a day on the subway. I am not saying that I can’t get hurt above ground but at least I can make a run for it.

Combating the Tech Itch

I can’t remember if I found this cartoon on Facebook or someone sent it to me in an email. Either way, it applies to many of us.

Digital Technology Provides a Different Type of Haute Couture

Carrie Underwood at the Grammys.

If you watched the Grammys last night you had to be mesmerized by the special effects that appeared on Carrie Underwood’s silver gown. It was specifically made for her performance of “Blown Away,” which won the Best Country Solo Performance and Best Country Song for 2012.

Monthly Movie Pass for a Dollar a Day

20130210-224253.jpg

Most of the time, Eliot and I are the oldest ones in the movie theater. I think as we get older our friends are less likely to shell out for a trip to the movies. The candy is more than the admission. Don’t call the cops, but we figured out a way to see multiple movies per afternoon for one price.

We call it movie surfing. We feel like teenagers sneaking into one screening room after another. I am always afraid that someone is watching us from a video camera. Just what I need — getting busted watching Argo. Continue reading

Apple Revolutionizes a New Category

20130210-195938.jpg

20130210-195906.jpg

Both iWatches are a mere speculation.

Notice I didn’t say that Apple was inventing a new category. They don’t necessarily invent anything, but rather make a category more intuitive, user-friendly, extremely productive, and important. Continue reading

Doug Denoff Update

20130210-110351.jpg

A few readers inquired whether Doug made it to the Grammys. I just received this email from him:

“3:45 flight – last one out. even got upgraded (not because of my post…just normal luck).
flight crew was very nice. in spite of management’s decisions

“PS from inside the plane, you can’t see the fancy expensive paint job….’cept from here.”
