Your Collections Say A Lot About You

I recently visited a friend of mine who I’ve known for years but rarely go to his apartment. He has the tiniest apartment you have ever seen but one of the largest personal compact disc collections you can ever imagine. Every inch of his walls is covered with custom-made little wooden slots that house each compact disc as if it were a piece of jewelry. A few years ago I asked him why he wasn’t converting his collection into digital music by simply downloading each album into iTunes or some other music manager. He said he didn’t want to spend the time doing it. Had he started the project then, he could have been finished by now. Several albums a day doesn’t take that much time. Instead, he has now decided to sell his collection because he is moving in with his children and his bedroom is going to be even smaller than what he lives in now.

I am still scratching my head over this scenario. If all of his music had been downloaded to his laptop or his portable music player, he could have taken his collection with him in the palm of his hand.  Why doesn’t he understand this phenomenon?  I am pretty sure he is not even going to sell his CD collection but rather siphon it off to neighbors in his fourth floor walkup in Hell’s Kitchen, in Manhattan. I tried to explain to him that his collection could sell for over a hundred thousand dollars, but he just looked at me and said, “Why bother?”  I pointed out that his children could use the money. He promised me that he would talk to them about it, but I guarantee that was just to get me off the topic.

Meanwhile, a  recent report from Strategy Analytics said that CDs are going the way of the 78s. For the first time, digital music download sales will surpass CD sales.

I thought this happened months ago, but I guess I was wrong. U.S. digital music sales will rise to $3.4 billion this year, exceeding the $3.38 billion in revenue from CDs and vinyl. “Streaming-music services such as Spotify and Pandora will be the key growth drivers over the next five years as usage and spending grow rapidly,” Ed Barton, director of digital media at Strategy Analytics, said. “The industry will be hoping that digital can rebuild the US music market to something approaching its former stature.”

With that in mind, I wanted to share what young people have to say about music these days. They echo what my old friend would have said in his teens and what he would still say today. Here are quotes from middle school students from around the country. They tell us a lot about life and the way we all should be living. Music can be a peacemaker, an energizer, a fantasy trip, and a quick reality check.

“Music lifts up your soul and releases it.”

“Music is important because it can describe people, places, movies, or animals that words can’t. Without music, the world would have a hard time understanding other things.”

“Music is important because it helps you express yourself in ways that you can’t with normal talking.”

“Music is important to me because it gives me something to look forward to everyday.”

“Music is important because it allows people to be creative and it offers more life to people.”

“Music is important in my life because it gives me something to do. I think it is important to the world because it helps people feel better and can give them hope.”

“Music is important in my life because I always have something to sing along to and relate to. It is important to the world as a whole because it brings us together.”

“Music is the highlight of my day! After a rough day, I like to listen to music to lift my spirits.”

“Life without music would be boring… no background music for movies, and life would sound dull.”

“I play a lot of video games, so I hear a lot of music with it. I may not notice, but the music provides more depth to the situation.”

“Music is important to people’s lives because it makes things better when things aren’t going right in the world.”

“Music isn’t important in my life, it IS my life. From flute, to piano, to guitar, it pretty much controls my life. In the case of the world, it unites it with happiness and continues and tells histories of civilization.”

“Without music, there would be nothing to do. There wouldn’t be video games, TV shows, or concerts to go to.”

“Without band, I wouldn’t have met all of my friends at school.”

“Music is an outburst of the soul.”

Bras Go High Tech

Every six months I visit Linda,The Bra Lady, on Lexington Avenue and 64th in New York City for a semi annual check up. Linda usually surveys the bag of bras and shouts out, “Dead, dead, dead.” She is referring to the condition of each bra. “Dead” means the bra is in no condition to do its job anymore.

If I show any signs of protest, I get the same lecture, “All the women on the upper east of Manhattan are wearing the wrong size bra. You my dear, have the benefit of me properly fitting you.”

Linda, The Bra Lady

For years I lived in fear of something terrible happening to Linda. What if I couldn’t depend on her? Who would help me achieve the appropriate lift? I worried more about Linda than any of my doctors. After all, brain surgeons are a dime a dozen but bra   experts are far and few between.

Then the other day, I was freed by the fairy bra mother. I learned that there are several new online sites like HerRoom, and True&Co, that demystify the painful experience of having to purchase a bra. These digital retailers are working feverishly to draw women away from in-store fitting rooms by persuading them that it is more convenient and private to use new online tools to find the best fitting bras.

Tomima Edmark, Founder of HerRoom–coincidentally, a former HWH client

The New York Times said online retailers are trying to address women’s complaints about the experience of  buying bras in stores. “Women bemoan the long wait for sales help and then the failure to find a bra that fits well and looks good.”

Below are some of the questions answered by digital bra retailers directly on their sites.Truth be told, women would never be able get most all of these questions answered during in store visits..

360 Panorama Changes Your Whole Perception

We had a complete picture-taking weekend. Between Eliot, Whitney and myself we took close to a thousand shots at the Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz, NY. It is just one of the most pictureque places we have ever seen. Everytime we turned around, we were gasping at one more sensational sight. We were surrounded by thousands of acres of mountain trails, lilly ponds, lakes, woods, rolling lawns, flower beds that looked like architectural sculptures, and a 143 year old Victorian Castle. There was no better time to learn the 360 Panorama app than this weekend. I saw this app a while ago but completely forgot about it until I noticed Whitney holding her iPhone up and doing a 360 degree turn. The digital photo that she took was just amazing and I wanted to learn how to do it too. It was so easy to learn that I am sorry that I forgot about it. But not anymore. The DigiDame will be offically dizzy taking 360 degree panorama photos. Click here to view a panorama shot I took of the magnificant flower beds on the grounds of Mohonk Mountain House. To get the full effect, use the up and down and left and right arrows on your keyboard.Click here http://360.io/qLBRrH

Go to the app store on your smartphone. Download the 360 Panorama app and all you have to do is fill out two or three questions and you too will be sharing very special photos with friends and family,

Disconnecting

We decided to spend a weekend in the mountains because we usually go to the beach. While our room has Internet, we are in a Victorian castle built on spectacular cliffs above the deep-blue waters of Lake Mohonk in 1869.

The hotel is in the heart of upstate New York’s scenic Hudson Valley and has thousands of acres of pristine forest and winding trails. It is just 90 miles north of New York City.

We spent the day in New Paltz touring the quaint town filled with art galleries, antique shops, great restaurants, and historic homes. Now we are getting ready for a lobster bake.

For some reason I didn’t feel like writing a tech story. Enjoy the pictures.

We Are Here For The “Pussy Riot”

All of a sudden I found myself in the middle of paparazzi, reporters, cameramen, broadcasters and music bloggers. I was at the ACE Hotel on West 29th Street in Manhattan last night, around 7pm, meeting a client at the hotel known as the digital hangout. The lobby is filled with rows of opened laptops as the next generation of innovators greet and meet each other with a glass of beer in their hands. Once again I am 40-plus years older than the crowd in both the lobby and the bar.

For two days in a suite at the ACE, my client was meeting with what we call “golden ears,” those who have a discerning ear for high quality audio sounds. We were privately demonstrating a revolutionary new audio player to music producers and audio engineers in order to get early feedback. That is all I am allowed to say at this point. We will be making an announcement in the next month or two.

I am sitting  in the bar area with my “very proper,” “pretty conservative,”  Asian client, discussing product rollout plans when we both hear a commotion on the street outside. We decided to investigate. Much to our surprise, lines were forming around the hotel guarded by police and security while the press were setting up remote “reporting” stations.

With client in tow, I ask one of the gals in line what was going on. She replies, “We are here for the “Pussy Riot.” Long Pause!  I am thinking to myself “Boy, is my hearing going bad. I thought I heard her say ‘pussy’ but it must have been something else.” I dare not ask again because I don’t want that word used in front of my client who may have never heard that before. Of course, my client asks me what she said, and I answer “something about animal rights.”

How would I ever explain the word “pussy” to him?  Even though he is 25 years my junior, I just don’t feel like spelling it out. I quickly hail a cab to go home. The minute I get there, I turn on the TV to learn that the Russian female punk rock band, Pussy Riot, were being sentenced to prison because they sang a  song in a church that criticized President Vladimir Putin of Russia.

Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alyokhina and Yekaterina Samutsevich

The three women, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alyokhina and Yekaterina Samutsevich , have already spent five months in detention since their arrests in March. It all started when their band started screaming “Mother Mary, please drive Putin away,” in a protest act in February inside Christ Savior Cathedral, one of Moscow’s grandest houses of worship. The women were accused of offending the congregation in the church at the time and for lack of respect for the Orthodox Church. Their arrests and high profile trial caught the attention of people around the world concerned about freedom of speech in Russia.

The show of solidarity at the ACE Hotel was just one of many “meet-ups” around the world.  I hope by the time my client’s product comes out, there is a “happy ending” to the “Pussy Riot.”

iPhone Headphone Tricks

I always beg friends to share their tech knowledge with me. Some people are always willing to let you know what they know, while others feel special by keeping the info to themselves.

It doesn’t really matter anymore which way a person swings because you can use Google to find out the answers to almost any question you may ever have. Yet, it is always nice when someone delivers the goods to you directly.

Here is some really fun advice you will enjoy about Apple’s free all-white headphones. They are much handier that most of you have ever imagined. Headphones that include a remote can be used to control your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch in 10 ways, according to CNET and Business Insider.

1.If you’re listening to music, toggle pause or play by tapping the center button once.

2.To fast-forward a song, tap the center button twice and long-press on the second tap.

3.To rewind a song, tap three times and long-press on the third tap.

4.To skip a song, double tap.

5.To go to the previous song, triple tap.

6.If you have an incoming call, tap the center button once to answer. Tap again to hang up.

7.To ignore an incoming call, long-press the center button. You’ll hear two beeps to confirm that the caller was sent to voice mail.

8.If you’re on the phone and you get a new call, tap the center button once to switch calls. To end that new call, hold the center button down for 2 seconds.

9.You can achieve supersteady shots by using your headphones as a shutter release. Tap the volume-up button to capture a photo.

10.For iPhone 4S owners: prompt Siri by long-pressing the center button.
