Turn Your iPhone Into A Ruler

I absolutely hate it when Eliot stands on a ladder to measure something. I have to look the other way. Now that I think about it, there should be a law that people over a certain age should not be allowed to climb on a ladder.

I know that will never happen, but maybe Eliot will consider the iPin Spatial Ruler made specifically for the iPhone. All you have to do is plug the iPin Spatial into the headphone jack, download the app, and you have a laser measuring device. The developers say it is quite accurate. Watch the video to be amazed.

The iPin Spatial Ruler is presently in a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo. The company raised over $100,000 so far, even though they only asked for $25,000. That means this product will be in high demand. They have 11 days to go. The iPin Spatial Ruler   should be ready to ship October 16th. Targeted price is $59.00.

A tutorial video shows you how to calibrate and measure. The iPin features a zoom feature on the touchscreen to precisely scan your measurements.

The big question is what will the company do when the iPhone reportedly eliminates its headphone jack in the future?  Rumors have been circulating for months that Apple is planning to incorporate Bluetooth wireless earbuds in the new iPhone 7.

The iPin folks said not to worry. They have something in the works.

Alarm Clocks Make Me Nervous

I love my iPhone but I don’t trust the alarm clock. Let me rephrase that. I don’t trust that I always set my alarm clock properly. Every time  we have to get up for an early flight, I make Eliot set the alarm on his iPhone too.

In my opinion, there are just too many functions on the iPhone and not enough confirmations that everything is set correctly. As I get older, the paranoia about whether I set my alarm properly gets worse. I end up waking up every hour, checking the time to make sure I didn’t oversleep.

For $45.00, I can buy a simple alarm clock and not worry anymore.  Check out the Lexon InOut Alarm Clock, available in many colors.

The alarm clock is designed by Hector Serrano. It’s an LCD alarm clock with dual display hour. It’s so simple to use. You just press  the  “plus” and “minus” buttons until you reach the desired time. You use the alarm display to turn it on or off. Batteries : 1.5 V AAA x 2.

Somehow, I just feel better relying on the Lexon for a good night sleep and an accurate wake up call.

Words Of Encouragement For Seniors To Make It Big On The Internet

Forty-year old Gary Vaynerchuk, one of the most successful entrepreneurs and investors in the digital world, says it’s time for seniors to become big time inventors and creators on the Internet. He wants to get rid of the notion that only millennials can make millions by inventing new concepts using the smartphone and other mobile devices.

I really encourage everyone reading this post to watch this six minute video. It’s the first time, in many years, that I heard any successful younger person say that the work experience of older people can help produce product and services that are truly needed and unique. Bless you Gary.

Gary’s message is not just about seniors who want to work. It’s more about not allowing those over 60 to think old. He feels we are in an ageless society where everyone should be able to contribute their talents forever.

Let’s hope Gary continues to push his theory in his live speeches, videos, meetups, meetings, seminars, books, and all of his networking activities.

Zika Virus Could Destroy Florida Political Careers

It’s going to be very interesting to see which Florida politicians survive the next election after Miami residents realize how previous decisions have impacted them now that they have to live with the threat of catching the Zika Virus. Steve and Lois discuss Marco Rubio, Rick Scott, and how the people of Miami are surviving Zika.

Apple’s New TV Show

For those of you who love Shark Tank, get ready for Apple’s Planet of the Apps.  I don’t know why I was so surprised when I first heard  about it. This show makes total sense.

There are over two million apps available on iOS (iPhone). Both young and old Americans are creating new ones every day. Several contemporaries of mine have also been busy developing apps as a second career. They are having more fun than ever before.

Friends tell me there is no official word whether this show will look like Shark Tank or focus on individual developers. One thing is for sure. Those entrepreneurs who get on the show will have access to some of the biggest investors and advisors in the world.

The mentors who are scheduled so far are: actress and  entrepreneur Jessica Alba; hip hop recording artist, musician and record producer Will.i.am; actress, singer, and food writer Gwyneth Paltrow; and entrepreneur, investor, author, public speaker, and internet personality Gary Vaynerchuk.

Gene Wilder

Contemporaries often joke that Facebook is all about showing what you ate for lunch and selfies. Some of that is true, but a good part of it, is to express deep emotions.

A friend, Jordan Walker-Pearlman lost his uncle, Gene Wilder, this week, and used Facebook to post his sorrow. Jordan talked about Gene all the time. He loved him so.

Happy Birthday Eliot

This little boy is 70 years old today. Eliot is not on Facebook, so I am taking this opportunity to display all of the good wishes he received on my and Whitney’s Facebook account.

Happy birthday Eliot. We love you

Mayim Bialik Did A Solid For Me

Comedian Tim Allen was first. Now, four-time Emmy-award nominee actress, mother, and neuroscientist Mayim Bialik has agreed to be the featured personality for the August Waterpik® Water Flosser Celebrity Auction.

The Auction Began August 25 at http://www.AuctionCause.com

Every month, I have to find a well-known personality who is willing to sign a Waterpik Water Flosser so we can auction it off to raise funds for Hope Lives, a charity in Colorado whose mission is to provide those touched by breast cancer the support, knowledge, and care needed to complement their medical treatment.

The auction started August 25 and will run for 10 days. Bialik is best known for her lead role in the NBC show Blossom and more recently as Amy Farrah Fowler on one of America’s top comedy series, The Big Bang Theory. She also has a PhD in neuroscience and is the mother of two boys

Bialik is also known for playing the young Bette Midler in “Beaches” when she was 12. She has had guest roles on some of television’s most beloved shows of the 1980s and 1990s, such as “MacGyver,” “Webster,” “Facts of Life,” and “Murphy Brown.” She has appeared in Woody Allen’s “Don’t Drink the Water,” HBO’s “Fat Actress,” “The Secret Life of the American Teenager,” and in several episodes of “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” In 2014, Mayim joined Peter Funt in the TV Land relaunch of the original hidden camera reality show, “Candid Camera.”

Bialik is the author of two books: Beyond the Sling (March 2012, Simon and Schuster) and Mayim’s Vegan Table (February 2014, Da Capo Press). Bialik was born in San Diego, California to first-generation Jewish American parents, documentary filmmakers and teachers. Mayim earned a BS from UCLA in 2000 in Neuroscience and Hebrew & Jewish Studies, and went on to the PhD program in Neuroscience, also at UCLA. In the fall of 2007, she completed her doctorate, which examined the role of oxytocin and vasopressin in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder in adolescents with Prader-Willi syndrome.

Bialik is also the founder of Grok Nation, an online community for people of all ages and backgrounds to dive deep into conversations on contemporary issues. The site hopes to lead to offline action, mobilizing individuals toward changing the world as a community.

Hope Lives provides not only emotional support, but a full complementary care program to help breast cancer survivors manage their daily routines. Waterpik® supports Hope Lives throughout the year through sales of their Pink Designer Series Water Flossers.

Two Disasters Interrupted

1-I’m not sure that many of my senior friends who use iPhones understand that they have to upgrade their iOS software immediately, otherwise they potentially run the risk of being a victim of security breaches.

Apple recently discovered several security mishaps that could make them vulnerable for undesirables to read their text messages, emails, contacts, and track calls.

Read all about it in the New York Times or Huffington Post.

2-Thank goodness for Amber Alerts. Today, I was sitting in a local coffee shop when all of a sudden the alarms went off on everyone’s smartphone. It was really weird hearing all of the sounds go off at the same time and listening to people’s reactions. Most of the customers were elderly and loudly remarking about the constant sound of the alarms.

It was upsetting  for me to hear the confusion and questions about what was going on. The alerts were being issued for a 3-year old Pennsylvania girl. The good news is that because of the miracle of the Amber Alerts, the girl was found safe just about two hours later.

The Celebration Begins

Eliot turns 70 on Tuesday. No major celebrations, just a few get togethers.Tonight turned out to be a big bonus because our friend Giselle Wolf Ungar was celebrating her birthday so a group of us went to Feinstein’s 54 Below to hear Michael Feinstein and Marilyn Maye perform. It was outstanding. We had such a great time. David Hyde Pierce sat right next to us. He will be playing with Bette Midler in Hello Dolly on Broadway next year.

Then  we went to Chuck Steffan and Ron Abel’s inside-outside condo (they have a huge terrace where more friends gathered to wish both Giselle and Eliot happy birthdays.

Whitney joined in on the festivities.
