Underground Hysteria

My girlfriend Ruth sent this video to me this morning because I told her why I hate taking the subway. You get to a certain age and you say “Enough.”

At 65, I am still working. I want to work forever but I don’t want to put myself in harm’s way, twice a day on the subway. I am not saying that I can’t get hurt above ground but at least I can make a run for it.

Combating the Tech Itch

I can’t remember if I found this cartoon on Facebook or someone sent it to me in an email. Either way, it applies to many of us.

Digital Technology Provides a Different Type of Haute Couture

Carrie Underwood at the Grammys.

If you watched the Grammys last night you had to be mesmerized by the special effects that appeared on Carrie Underwood’s silver gown. It was specifically made for her performance of “Blown Away,” which won the Best Country Solo Performance and Best Country Song for 2012.

Monthly Movie Pass for a Dollar a Day

20130210-224253.jpg

Most of the time, Eliot and I are the oldest ones in the movie theater. I think as we get older our friends are less likely to shell out for a trip to the movies. The candy is more than the admission. Don’t call the cops, but we figured out a way to see multiple movies per afternoon for one price.

We call it movie surfing. We feel like teenagers sneaking into one screening room after another. I am always afraid that someone is watching us from a video camera. Just what I need — getting busted watching Argo. Continue reading →

Apple Revolutionizes a New Category

Both iWatches are a mere speculation.

Notice I didn’t say that Apple was inventing a new category. They don’t necessarily invent anything, but rather make a category more intuitive, user-friendly, extremely productive, and important. Continue reading →

Doug Denoff Update

20130210-110351.jpg

A few readers inquired whether Doug made it to the Grammys. I just received this email from him:

“3:45 flight – last one out. even got upgraded (not because of my post…just normal luck).
flight crew was very nice. in spite of management’s decisions

“PS from inside the plane, you can’t see the fancy expensive paint job….’cept from here.”

Today Show Anchors Admit Internet Ignorance

Andrea Smith, a writer for the very popular tech blog, Mashable recently did an Op Ed piece on three Today Show personalities who make millions of dollars every year, who admitted on air nationwide they know little about social media. Smith was upset by this caviler attitude because when she worked for ABC as a news writer and producer for 20 years, she was expected to be knowledgable about current news and pop culture.

I met Andrea Smith a number of times at industry events and I can honestly say she doesn’t easily rag on people. That’s why her piece in Mashable caught my eye. Smith was offended that “Today’s Willie Geist, Savannah Guthrie and Natalie Morales — three TV journalists at the top of their profession — laughed on network TV about their lack of knowledge about Facebook, Twitter and privacy on social media.”

The admission took place after a segment about Randi Zuckerberg’s private family photos being shared publicly. This was a story publicized everywhere because of the privacy issue. The sister of the founder of Facebook got caught in the same privacy issue concerning the majority of Facebook users. Why is Facebook taking certain liberties with personal content belonging to its members?

Smith sent a warning to the Today Show.

“Here’s a wake-up call, morning crew; your audience is not that dumb. They watch TV news to keep up with what’s happening in the world. It is your job to inform them. Reading the news and then proclaiming you don’t understand any part of it is the epitome of failure.”

A Las Vegas Peek into the Love Bible for Seniors

and his partner Ron (right)

In the last year or two, I have met a lot of men and women in their 60s and 70s who feel they have no identity. Their careers are finished, their children are grown, and their calendars are filled with doctor appointments. Some are fortunate to have grandchildren to fill their time; others still feel that is not enough.

That is why I was captivated by “The Sun City Sinner,” a 2012 self-published book by Netta Schucco. Netta started writing this book when she was 79. It took her five years to finish it, but she was determined to do so. Continue reading →

The Northeast Blizzard

This morning I woke up to a winter wonderland outside my window. It doesn’t last that long in Manhattan, too many people walking on the sidewalks, too many cars on the roads. I was curious to see what other neighborhoods looked like. I decided to ask family and friends to take photos and send them to me so I can post them on DigiDame. Thank you Mr/Mrs Internet for allowing us to share photos so easily.

Stop Talking to Yourself

My girl friend Bonnie asked me to share this with you. Most people who use smartphones, speaker phones, and conference call systems, do not realize that only one person can talk at a time. Continue reading →
