Roku Now Offers Easy Access, Private Audio

For everyone who loves their Roku living room streaming-video box, I have big news. Actually it was all over the news today. The new Roku 3 has features you will really want to know about. The best video explanation comes from Walt Mossberg of AllThingsD. Click here for The Wall Street Journal channel video.

The two most important features are an easier navigation system and an earphone jack located right in the remote control for private listening. Mossberg points out he can finally go on his noisy treadmill, which usually drowns out the sound of the TV, and hear better, clearer sound. In addition, no one else in the house is now disturbed by the high volume of his TV programs.

Good Idea vs. Overkill

I recently visited an office in downtown Manhattan called an incubator. That means the space is being used by entrepreneurs to develop new products or services. The office is being financially supported by big money people who pay all the expenses while the concept is in the research and development stage. When the product or service comes to market, the money people take their fair share of the profits.

Hello Grandma Google and Grandpa YouTube

Since I never did well at Trivial Pursuit, what I am about to tell you doesn’t bother me at all. The traditional role of the grandparent dispensing advice to their children’s children is disappearing. For centuries grandchildren turned to their grandparents for advice on everything. Not anymore. So I’m off the hook. It looks like I won’t be on the spot to cough up information for my future grandchildren.

I Need a New Zone

20130304-173623.jpg

I have been feeling very jumpy lately. I am talking about that nervous feeling, the kind that makes me on edge periodically during the day. There is nothing going on to cause this feeling. I am manufacturing it. I have been doing it my whole life.

There have been long stretches when this doesn’t happen. It usually occurs when there are fewer demands in my life. I know you may be questioning my last statement because my work is constantly filled with daily demands. Those demands are not as intense as caring for an ailing parent, dealing with troubled children, having health issues, or financial challenges. When those situations occur, I find my inner strength and focus on my responsibilities.

The Secret Life of Seniors

Make sure you view Ida's run at 97 years old in the video below

Make sure you view Ida’s run at 97 years old in the video below

I thought we needed a little inspiration today. It started out with a big boom outside our window on East 62nd Street. Eliot was in the other room when I heard him yell out, “Someone got hit by a car.” I quickly looked outside our window. I looked down. Ten floors below, I saw a woman was pinned under a car, with only her head sticking out. The man driving the car was standing next to her in shock. Within 15 seconds a fire engine showed up, follow by police cars, ambulances, and more fire trucks. The first responders went into action. They tried to lift the car off her but minutes later a rescue team showed up with some sort of a hand lift and yanked it up. She was immediately freed, covered, strapped onto a board, picked up on a gurney, and swiftly wheeled into the ambulance. The siren wailed, and off they went.

Dr. Internet at your local Pharmacy

20130303-181738.jpg

Several times over the years, doctor friends of mine have expressed interest about consulting with patients over the Internet. They knew I was professionally involved in the Internet, so we decided to collaborate.

The patients loved it. They could get immediate attention without ever leaving their homes. Some patients were half way around the world when they emailed my medical friends with medication questions, sudden illnesses they needed advice on, and urgent background information required for additional travel plans. Google Getting Closer to Debuting Eyewear

Google Glasses, the augmented reality head-mounted display (HMD) being developed by Google, may not be that far off.

HMD glasses display the same information you would see on your smart phone right on your eyewear. Google believes this revolutionary concept will be warmly welcomed by the American public because it is hands-free and can interact with the Internet via natural language voice commands.

New Concept in Office Chairs

steelcase1

So many of my friends are complaining about bad backs, stiff necks, and achy arms. They are running to chiropractors, getting massages, doing yoga, and taking hot showers. It turns out that their office chairs may be ruining their lives.

Steelcase, a global leader in office furniture, recently admitted that very few people actually sit in an office chair the way it was designed for them. There is a whole new set of requirements. Office workers are using smartphones, tablets, iPhones, and ebooks while they are sitting in the same chair that they used for a desktop computer.

Moving On Can Be Quite Refreshing

20130301-221334.jpg

Everyday my friend Ben sends me very nasty emails about President Obama. He is fuming that he was re-elected. He blames everything that is going wrong in the world on him. This week was the worst. When Ben saw the first lady appear on the Oscars, he wanted to do one of two things: throw up his dinner or throw his remote control through the TV set. I read every word of his emails because here is a guy who is very involved in technology, is a mentor to many young tech entrepreneurs, has held very high positions at both large and smaller companies, has traveled the world, has recommended our PR agency to many accounts, and is actually a big teddy bear to anyone who really needs his help. Yet, he wakes up every day and is pissed because Romney lost.
